Awesome wedding cake trends in 2023, coming right up!
Over the last few years, it seemed like wedding cakes have fallen out of popularity. What with the all the donut walls, fancy cupcakes, and dessert bars, it’s easy to look at social media and assume that wedding cakes have become extinct. However, this is simply not the case. Most weddings have wedding cakes, and they are spectacular.
Whether you’re into simple wedding cakes, or want to go a bit more glamorous, it’ll be fun to learn about the awesome wedding cake trends that are popping up at weddings right now. Some of these cakes may not be your style. Some may be, but could be out of budget. Still, it’s always fun to browse, right?
Awesome Wedding Cake Trends In 2023
This post is going to review awesome wedding cake trends in 2023. These trends are brought to you from a variety of sources. These sources include The Knot, Brides, Over The Moon, and World Bride Magazine. If you’d like to learn more about any of the styles, click on the links provided above or scroll to the bottom for a full list of links.
Let’s get into it!
PRESSED FLOWER WEDDING CAKES
Did you think the pressed flower trend was over? Well, it’s not.
Among awesome wedding cake trends this year includes pressed flower wedding cakes. These are pretty cakes, with pressed flowers right on top of them. Depending on your preference, these pressed flowers may be actual flowers, or they may be icing decorations. If you’re into this trend, work with your baker on what’s possible.
A pressed flower wedding cake would be perfect for a spring wedding, don’t you think?
THE ANTI-MINIMALIST WEDDING CAKE
Can you believe with the whole minimalist movement that the anti-minimalist wedding cake lands on a list of awesome wedding cake trends?
It does. I can’t believe it, either.
The anti-minimalist cake is a whole thing. It’s a cake that has a lot going on. A cake that is loaded up with decorations, packed with personality, and oozing with excitement. For some anti-minimalist cakes, the decorations actually come three dimensional, coming out of the cake as if they were alive. Other anti-minimalist cakes have frosting and icing that showcase different scenes on the cake, leaving either very little or no blank space at all.
The anti-minimalist cake isn’t for everyone, but it’s a memorable one to look at and enjoy.
PEARLED WEDDING CAKES
Have you noticed that pearls have made a comeback? Yes? Well, they are a hit when it comes to cakes, too.
A pearled wedding cake is as if the cake is wearing actual pearls. It involves intricate decoration on the cake, with precise placement of edible pearls. If done right, a pearled wedding cake looks incredible. The beauty of it is that it can be as minimal or extra as you want it to be. A string of pearls may be just fine for you. Or, a fully decorated cake may be your style. Either way, it’ll be stunning.
THE SEE-THROUGH WEDDING CAKE
Have you seen a see-through wedding cake yet? They are so cool.
A see-through cake is just as it sounds. It has multiple tiers, and one of them is see-through. This may be done by using a plastic box, a glass cylinder, or even rods and a sturdy base for the upper tiers. There are also see-through cakes that have a sort of cut out or hole in the middle of one of the tiers. I’m not going to lie. See-through cakes are pretty cool, and I’d love to see one, one day. Wouldn’t you?
FUNFETTI
Let’s move onto more cost-effective awesome wedding cake trends. For example, funfetti.
Everyone loves funfetti, right? It’s a sort of vanilla flavored cake, with dissolved sprinkles in it. When you cut into the cake, there is a plethora of colors within the actual cake. From the outside, the cake is unassuming. The inside can be any flavor at all. And then, you cut it, and wow, it’s funfetti! Who was expecting that?
Look, funfetti cakes may seem more appropriate for a children’s birthday party than a wedding. However, after being featured on a popular Netflix dating show (Love Is Blind, anyone!), they have entered into wedding land. And, I’m here for it.
FLOATING CAKES
Now, floating cakes are super cool.
Similar to see-through wedding cakes, but different, floating cakes appear to defy gravity. They are usually made on a glass cake stand, and appear to be floating. It could be that a middle tier is missing. Or, that the tiers are extremely off-kilter, veering to the left and right as if going in different directions. Some floating cakes even appear to be built in the middle of a chandelier, which is an awesome image. For those cakes, the top and middle tiers are matching parts of a “chandelier”, and it makes for quite the cake.
CAKES THAT MATCH THE WEDDING DRESS
Forget matching bridesmaids dresses. It’s all about the matching cake. To the bride.
I know that at first glance, this may seem like one of the most cringy wedding cake trends. However, it’s actually pretty sweet. And can be a clever way to pull together your wedding theme. For example, your wedding dress may be made with lace. How cool would it be to have an intricate wedding cake that appears to be made of lace? Or, your wedding dress may have a cool belt with it. Your wedding cake can have a belt, too, on each tier.
For this one, the similarities can be as subtle or as overt as you’d like them to be. Plus, you’d be on trend.
UNUSAL SHAPED WEDDING CAKES
Have you noticed that many wedding cakes these days don’t look like . . . well . . . cakes?
One of the most awesome wedding cake trends right now is to have a cake that doesn’t look like a cake. Bakers are getting crafty and creative with various styles. Some notable ones? Cakes that look like a stack of pristine and expensive pillows. I’ve seen cakes that look like towers of tea cups. There was even a viral pineapple cake online.
Long story short is that your wedding cake can look like whatever you want. Including a pineapple.
FLORALS CIRCLING THE WEDDING CAKE, TOP TO BOTTOM
Not so into the pressed flower trend? What about flowers in general?
Florals circling wedding cakes is trending hard right now. In fact, many wedding cakes have a whole floral tornado going on. Starting from the bottom, bakers will adorn wedding cakes with flowers that twirl all the way to the top. In some cases, the flowers are real and meant for decoration only. In other cases, they are edible but real flowers. For some cakes, the flowers are made of icing or crafting sugar. The cakes are beautiful in all cases.
GROOMS CAKES
Oh, did you think that groom’s cakes were gone? Sorry to tell you, groom cakes are trending again.
I’m just kidding! Groom cakes are awesome.
Look, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, a groom cake is a cake made especially for the groom. Meaning, it’s not a fancy, stuffy, amazingly perfect wedding cake. It’s more something that the groom would want as a fantasy cake. The cake may be sports themed, or shaped like a sports car. They may be iced in black or blue icing, and be quite the scene with the right baker.
I find groom cakes a little funny, personally, but to each their own. No worries about having one, and having fun with it. You’ll be totally on trend.
CAKE SLICES AS FAVORS
Now, this is a wedding cake trend I can really get behind.
Why have separate favors when you can send guests home with a slice of your wedding cake? I mean, many guests skip the cake at the actual wedding. And, if you have a dessert bar in addition to a cake, they may truly appreciate a perfectly wrapped up leftover. If you can coordinate it with your venue, caterer, or baker, look into this trend. Your guests will thank you, and you won’t have to spend extra for favors.
LAMBETH CAKES
Have you ever heard of a Lambeth cake? Me either, until I was doing research on awesome wedding cake trends.
A Lambeth cake has a very specific look to it. It has detailed piping made of royal icing, and it’s topped with cherries. The icing is something to behold, and is extremely important to this style of cake. The layers created by the piping is what gives the cake it’s intricacies and makes it so beautiful. Many decorators would consider a Lambeth cake to be overly piped and dramatic in style.
The great thing about Lambeth cakes is that they can come in many shapes. They can also be just one tier, which makes them a bit easier to build.
COLORFUL CAKES
Remember earlier when I told you about the anti-minimalist cake as one of today’s awesome wedding cake trends? Well, let’s get into that same realm with some color.
These days, colorful cakes are the rage. No longer are newlyweds held to the “all white cake” standard of yesteryear. It’s totally okay to have a cake that rocks any color frosting. And, the inside can be whatever floats your boat, too. Tie dye cakes and a variety of techniques can make the inside of the cake a moment when the cake is cut.
So, if your wedding is colorful, go for it with your cake. You’ll be totally in style.
