Things That Stick Out: Monday EditionThe headline from NY Fed President Williams' interview with the New York Times Monday was something like 'we need to maintain restrictive rates for some time.' Nothing new there and consistent with the Fed's effort to maintain optionality over the next few policy meetings.Ah, but what rates? Nominal, which the Fed directly controls, or real? You have to read the entire article, but Williams' primary concern appears to be that real rates will quickly become far too high if inflation recedes as projected, and'won't be consistent with our (the Fed's) goals.''It's really more that if inflation is coming down, it will be natural to bring nominal interest rates down next year, consistent with that, to keep the stance of monetary policy appropriate…”One data point does not make a trend, butit wouldn't take much convincing for the Fed to ditch its 'higher for longer' mantra in favor of something more dovish. Aside fromPowell, Williams' view carries more weight than anyone else on the FOMC, and it's obvious fromthis interview that they are eager to wrap upthe tightening cycle before something breaks.Currently, thechances of a 12th rate hike tradeat around 40%. Inour opinion, pressing that bet presents a poor risk/reward profile. One soft number and those odds will drop to zero.
